One of These Things is Not Like the Other: Stream Restoration and Stream Ecosystem Restoration Stream restoration practices tend to focus on the part rather than the whole, often ignoring streams’ fundamental connections with their surrounding landscape, says Michael Gooseff, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and kick-off speaker in the 2008 EarthTalks Fall Colloquium Series. Gooseff argues that stream restoration efforts have largely focused on specific aspects of streams such as stability of bed material and banks. While addressing those is important, an increasingly common goal is restoring stream ecosystem structure and function. Gooseff’s talk, “One of These Things is Not Like the Other: Stream Restoration and Stream Ecosystem Restoration,” is scheduled for 112 Walker and is open to the public. The “Quenching the Thirst” series is sponsored by the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the College of Agricultural Sciences and the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment.
